Mindset Nugget: It’s not about the money
This topic was requested by one of my Instagram followers this week so this nugget was written in response to that. During my first yoga teacher training, it became very apparent that many yogis have a strange relationship with money and some have interesting judgements about rich people. The judgements that I’ve heard around me was that somehow it was bad to make money from yoga or to be rich. The opinion was that being rich made you greedy, untrustworthy even. WTH? If that’s what you think about rich people in general, we have some work to do! Can we put the judgements aside and take a look within?
I’m sharing this because it’s what I’ve seen time and time again with yoga teachers under-valuing themselves and being prepared to work for peanuts. I’ve also noticed them being suspicious of those that want to make decent money. That somehow ‘proper’ yogis don’t need money as we should just live off air right? Sound familiar? Well, all that is complete BS. Thank goodness I soon got over that one! Thanks to my mindset coaching, I value my services and myself a whole lot more and you certainly can too! In fact as I put up my prices I noticed that people understood the value of what I had to offer much more.
I’ll let you in on a secret, it’s not about the money, it’s about your RELATIONSHIP to money and what it represents to a part of you. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself’:
What does money mean to me?
What does money give me that I can’t do otherwise?
If I make X amount of money what would I want to do with it? (Get really clear on this, WHY do you want money beyond paying the bills, putting food on the table. Do you want to study more, open your own studio, help more people, open a cat sanctuary?)
What do you think your family and friends will think of you made more money?
Mindset work is about peeling back the layers (yep, we’re back to the onion analogy) and looking at the story under the story (what is our ego hiding from us that we’re not currently aware of and need to excavate and examine?) Your loyalty to your family’s beliefs around money may be what’s holding you back.
Let’s get one thing straight, money is what money does (it’s not even real, it’s a concept humans made up!). It’s not bad or dirty, it’s simply a means of energy exchange. We all carry money beliefs and stories about it based on our upbringing. When we start to examine these we can better understand where this beliefs come from and how to change them.
